The Wavell School

Welcome to Science

Science is studied by all students in KS3 and KS4

Aim of the Science Curriculum

The Wavell curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all students: - Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics - Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of Science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them - Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

The knowledge the students will have by the end of the course:

  • Particles
  • Cells
  • Forces
  • Energy
  • Scientific enquiry

Some recent highlights from the Science Department:

British Science Week
This year's theme is "Curiosity" and Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed a practical activity which was designed to show how magnetic force can be used to store information. They learnt to write their name and other science related words in a pattern of 1s and 0s - called Binary Code - using coins and counters, then use it to read hidden words with just a magnet.

Year 7 Speed Demons in the Lab!

Our Year 7 scientists became have been investigating factors that affect average speed by setting up wooden ramps at different heights, timing how long toy cars took to travel 1 metre and then calculating the average speed at each height.

Physics and Maths are pretty cool when there are toy cars involved!

Year 9 students used Maths and Science in their Reflection Practical -They nailed drawing ray diagrams and measuring the angles, and showed fantastic engagement throughout.
Year 8s bring Physics to life!
Students explored convection by predicting what would happen when purple crystals were added to a heated tube—then watched their predictions come to life. The crystals made the convection currents visible, creating an exciting, hands-on demo of energy in action.

Open Evening

Our Prefects and Technicians showed off the department on Open Evening with some cool experiments!
