Wavell World Book Day 2025: Welcome to the Reading Games!
This year, Wavell took World Book Day to the next level with our first-ever Annual Reading Games, immersing students in the gripping world of dystopian literature. From thought-provoking competitions to lunchtime reading groups, the event was a celebration of stories that challenge, inspire, and spark debate.
Dystopia Takes Over Wavell
Dystopian fiction is all about survival, rebellion, and questioning authority—and this year’s World Book Day events reflected just that. With themed activities, competitions, and interactive lessons, students explored the darker side of storytelling and the real-world issues that make these books so powerful.
🎭 Who’s Who? – Dystopian Dress-Up Competition
From totalitarian regimes to post-apocalyptic survival, staff brought their favourite dystopian characters to life in our costume contest. Whether it was Katniss Everdeen, Offred, or the rebels from The Maze Runner, the competition was fierce!
📚 Dystopian-Themed Literacy Starters in Lessons
Across subjects, teachers integrated dystopian themes into lesson starters, using literacy-focused activities to explore the language, themes, and impact of dystopian fiction. These engaging literacy tasks included:

- Expanding their vocabulary and comprehension through thought-provoking discussions.
- Strengthening key subject skills by responding to dystopian prompts.
📚 Lunchtime Reading Groups
Students gathered in dedicated reading zones to dive into some of the best dystopian books, including:
- The Hunger Games
- They Both Die at the End
- The Knife of Never Letting Go
- The Lorax
📝 Writing & Art Competitions – Creating New Worlds
