Reading Interventions

Effective reading interventions are key to ensuring all students develop the skills they need to succeed across the curriculum and beyond.

Our Reading Buddies programme offers students the opportunity to build their reading skills by working alongside Student Mentors from the Literacy Leadership Programme. We run groups tailored to support students who would benefit from additional reading support, including those who speak an additional language at home. Mentors listen to their Buddies read, check their understanding, explain new vocabulary, and help select new texts. Buddies are rewarded with house points for finishing books, motivating and celebrating their progress. The scheme provides a carefully chosen selection of fiction and non-fiction texts designed to engage interest and build essential reading skills. Beyond literacy, the programme fosters positive relationships between students and helps develop the confidence and leadership skills of our Student Mentors.

Additionally, we use Sparx Reader as part of our targeted literacy interventions. Sparx Reader offers personalised reading practice and comprehension activities, tailored to each student’s reading level and needs. This digital tool supports students in developing fluency, vocabulary, and confidence, with progress tracked to ensure interventions are effective and responsive. Progress is closely tracked, and student achievements are regularly celebrated to motivate continued growth and success.

Within the classroom, teachers implement evidence-informed strategies to provide timely and effective reading support. These interventions are carefully selected based on proven research to enhance reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing skills, ensuring that support is both targeted and impactful.
