Youth Speaks

By Megan Hodges and Aisha Wood

Youth Speaks is a competition for public speaking run by the Rotary Club. Schools create teams of three speakers to compete in debates against other teams about issues that affect young people today.

Wavell recently took part in Youth Speaks against the Ash Manor and St Nicholas schools, winning all of the four debates they took part in. Overall, they won four trophies, two of which were for intermediate and senior round team debates, where there were two KS3 teams and a KS4 team. The others were for the two main speakers who won awards in the individual rounds.

The Wavell teams will be going through to the regional semi-finals on the 7th February, were they will hopefully do as well as they did in their last round, and win all the debates they take part in.

We had a chance to catch up with the teacher who runs the club, Miss. Hill, who said, “I’m very proud of all the teams who took part in Youth Speaks. It’s amazing that one school could take home four out of four prizes. This sets a big challenge for next year!”

Youth speaks club is on Wednesdays, C2.4, 3:30-4:15pm
