UKMT Team Maths Challenge

By Oliver Dunn and Aisha Wood Year 9

On Tuesday 27th February we travelled by train to Churcher’s College in Petersfield to compete in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Team Challenge Regional Final. The team consisted of four Wavell students; two from Year 8, Katie Booth and Dylan Thomas, and two from Year 9, Oliver Dunn and Aisha Wood.

There were 4 rounds; the crossnumber, shuttle round, relay and the group round.

In the group round we worked in pairs to complete 10 questions. For the crossnumber, one pair answered the across questions and one answered the down – you had to complete it like a crossword. In the shuttle round, we took turns answering questions that required the previous answerer to get it right. Finally, in the relay round one pair answered one question and the other pair didn’t get the next one until the 1st pair got the answer right. One pair had to move to sit on the other side of the hall so we had to run to give them the next question.

In the end we came 22nd out of 33 schools but we all enjoyed the experience and got Mars Bars for the train home!
