Literacy Day 2018

On February 26th the Wavell School held its annual celebration of books and reading with Literacy Day, timed to coincide with the week of World Book Day.

Students in Years 7 – 10 started the day with an assembly, ably hosted by Year 10 students Bethan, Carys, Ellen, Alice, Faheem and  Tom. They were treated to poetry performances from Sarah and Izzy and short stories read by Carla.

Prizes were awarded for the Wavell Writing Competition, with first prize in KS3 going to Oliver King for ‘Birthday Mayhem’ . The KS3 runner up was Grace Houghton .  In KS4, the runner up was Maisy Carty with her story, 'The Victim, The Killer' , whilst the winner, Emily Sparkes, submitted a fabulously intense description of a fire  .   There were also prizes for the Book Cover Competition organised by our Art teachers.  Prizes went to:  George Foster Year 7, Izzy Vaz Year 8 and Chloe Foster Year 9.

Throughout the day, students were amazed and amused by the staff Fancy Dress.  There was a fabulous range of costumes, from the characters from Peter Pan teaching Science to the Rabbits of Watership Down giving classroom support!

Murder in the Library was a lunchtime hit, with students having to be turned away as there were too many keen to solve the mystery!  Well done to Breanna in Year 8 for winning.

As a rest from the activities, the school enjoyed Stop and Read throughout the day – a lovely moment to enjoy some reading and get lost in another world.

With thanks to all the staff and students who supported so ably – here’s looking forward to next year!
