Edge Hill University Mathematics

Challenge 2017

Five teams from Year 9 entered this year’s Edge Hill University Mathematics Challenge, an annual competition organised by the Faculty of Education that provides pupils with the opportunity to tackle engaging mathematical activities while developing teamwork and communication.

Demonstrating resilience and perseverance within their teams, the students embraced the challenges, which were also designed to engage their problem solving skills.

Three of our five teams progressed to the second round where they had a second problem to consider, which tested their knowledge, teamwork and ingenuity further.

Two of these teams then successfully made it through to the final, where they had to submit a presentation to the University.

Out of the 313 teams taking part nationally, only 25 teams made it through to the final stage of the competition. Thus, although we were not the overall winners, this was an amazing achievement by an excellent group of young mathematicians. Well done to all the entrants on their hard work, and congratulations to the two teams who were finalists.

They were:

Team: Isobel Piper, Emily Waters, Drew Arrowsmith and Alice Knight.

Team: Jack Billingham, Kashish Limbu, Harvey Cutler, Samuel Rotimi and Jack Ujszaszi
